ARTIST BIO

I am a lifelong artist and musician from Stroudsburg, PA, in the heart of the Pocono Mountains.  I was born on November 21, 1955 in what was truly an idyllic little town.  Long before I was old enough to attend college, I had a rich and extensive knowledge of art and music due to a large family that was steeped in the arts. Summer art camps, trips to museums, art classes, and a host of relatives who were actors, painters, musicians, radio station disc jockeys and more were a constant source of inspiration to my siblings and I.  My education and practical experience in art was well rounded by the time I left grade school.

I have always been fascinated by the great masters of the early 20th century, particularly the Dadist movement and especially those few who used chance methods in the commission of their works. I had for many years tried to invent a way to capture that essence using my camera, and by chance in 2006, I accidentally found what I had been searching for right under my nose- a way to capture the fleeting glimpse of the never ending parade of subject matter nature shows us every day. "Pareidoliac apophenia" may be the way a few of the more stuffy types would explain it, but some would simply describe it as "Hey, look- that cloud looks like a bunny!"

And so, with camera in hand, and a wonderful technique in my pocket, I set about creating real art. I felt the hand of nature guiding my lens, and it really made the hair on the back of my neck stand up sometimes. I started seeing an artistic project that had no limitations, and the excitement lead me to start searching the world for others who have, like me, been moved by the art of chance. My search led me to peruse thousands of online portfolios, pouring over bio after bio, and ultimately to the conclusion that this was going to be a very small club. I found artists who found beautiful subject matter in smoke, water, geological formations... those who let gravity, light, wind, chaos and decay become their brushstrokes- but the one thing that really struck me was the rarity of the breed.

I have collected 21 artists from around the world to form a collective now known as MAMA, or the Movement of Aleatoric Modern Artists. We hope to bring a fresh new perspective to chance arts in the 21st century, to inspire emerging artists with our collective methods, and educate and entertain students, collectors and art lovers about how nature, since the dawn of man, has truly been the greatest artist.
